Who should
attend?
This course focuses on developing the
skills necessary for individuals with responsibility for
training in tribunals and equivalent bodies. It is intended
particularly to benefit those who are new to, or relatively
experienced in, the trainer role and aims to equip participants
with the competences they require to deliver effective programmes
of training for chairmen and members in their tribunals.
What happens on
the course?
The course takes a step-by-step approach to the
training process, from identifying training needs and setting
aims and learning outcomes, through designing and delivering training,
to evaluating training. Training the Trainer enlists
the expertise of a variety of training and education professionals
from judicial, academic and management training backgrounds, who
address issues such as training needs analysis, teamwork, facilitating
small groups, presentation skills and evaluation techniques. The
style of the course is intended to encourage consistent interaction,
combining small-group work with discussion sessions and
the opportunity to deliver a presentation and receive feedback.
What are the aims
and learning outcomes?
The course aims to allow participants to arrive
at greater understanding, efficiency and confidence in all
aspects of training, enabling them to develop their skills
in the following areas:
- Understanding the principles of facilitative
training and the related approaches and
methodologies.
- Becoming confident with group dynamics and
behavioural and motivational issues.
- Identifying and analysing training needs
and setting objectives accordingly.
- Planning and administering course programmes
and training materials.
- Implementing coherent standards and processes
for effective evaluation of training.

Who should attend?
Part of our programme of training for trainers,
The effective use of Small Groups in Training targets
those who will be required to lead, chair or facilitate syndicate
groups in training sessions. Such individuals may be in charge
of training in a tribunal or similar context, and most are expected
to hold judicial office. The seminar aims to equip participants
with the knowledge and skills required to achieve confident and
effective facilitation of small-group
work. The JSB is happy to discuss the possibility of providing an event
tailored to the needs of members of a specific jurisdiction.
What happens at the seminar?
This event takes the form of an intensive, one-day
training seminar focusing exclusively on small-group work.
The style of the seminar is designed to reflect the content,
and consequently the majority of the day takes the form of
interactive small-group work. While this is facilitated by
training specialists, there is nevertheless plenty of opportunity
for individuals to practise their own facilitation techniques
with fellow participants. This creates a hands-on training
environment that is conducive to developing mediation and group
management skills in a small-group context.
What are the aims
and learning outcomes?
By the end of the day, participants will have
had the opportunity to:
- Identify the benefits of facilitated
small groups as a training method and the processes
at work in small groups.
- Understand how these processes can be used.
- Improve their skills and confidence in small-group
facilitation through practice and
constructive feedback.

Who should attend?
Even experienced trainers can find successful
integration of equal treatment issues into training a difficult
task. This course is designed to help trainers to further their
knowledge and understanding of the importance of fair treatment
in tribunals. This seminar is well suited to delivery to a
number of people from a single jurisdiction, and the JSB is
happy to discuss the possibility of providing a tailored event
of that kind.
What happens at
the seminar?
The seminar has been developed in close consultation
with the JSB’s Equal Treatment Advisory Committee (ETAC)
and enlists the expertise of training specialists and tribunal
practitioners. It includes a range of presentations and discussion
sessions intended to complement the principles of the JSB’s
Equal Treatment – Training for
Tribunals training pack. Participants will have the chance
to address vital issues such as forms of discrimination and how
to counteract them, the potential impact of stereotyping on tribunal
decision-making, and raising awareness of equal treatment issues
as part of a training programme.
What are the aims
and learning outcomes?
Equal Treatment seminar for tribunal trainers
enables trainers within tribunals to implement awareness of
equal treatment as an inherent part of their training programmes.
Participants at the seminar can expect to develop their knowledge
of equal treatment in training in the following ways:
- Understanding the importance of including
equal treatment issues in the training of
tribunal chairs and members.
- Learning how to address equal treatment
issues in tribunal training programmes.
- Applying the principles of equal treatment
to the training context through reference
to modules and case studies.

purposes of mentoring, the key tasks and responsibilities of a
mentor and ways of enabling mentors to develop the skills that

the skills that they have identified for themselves in a small-group
environment. Participants will also prepare an action plan for
the introduction of a mentoring scheme into their tribunal.
What are the aims
and learning outcomes?

in introducing mentoring into their jurisdiction
and involves:
- Defining mentoring in general terms and distinguishing
between different types of
mentoring.
