Appraisal Standards and Appraiser Competences in Tribunals

The JSB has published the second edition of its Appraisal Standards Framework (PDF 625KB), which includes for the first time a set of competences for tribunal appraisers. The new Appraisal Standards and Competences can be downloaded here.

Copies are being circulated to tribunals by post and further copies are available on request from the JSB at tribunals@jsb.gsi.gov.uk. A separate booklet containing the Appraiser Competences which can be supplied for circulation to appraisers will be available shortly in handy A5 format.

Multi-Juridiction Appraisal Skills Seminar for Tribunals

The JSB has also developed a new follow-up appraisal skills seminar for experienced tribunal appraisers, based around the new Appraisal Standards and Competences. Nominations are invited from tribunals for a pilot seminar in spring 2010 (date to be fixed). Brief details about the course can be found in the Tribunals Prospectus.

Tribunals which are interested in nominating one or two appraisers for the pilot seminar (or subsequent courses) should contact Annmarie Alao at tribunals@jsb.gsi.gov.uk for further details.

Nominations for the Essential Judicial Skills Course 2010

New Joint JSB/Media Guidelines Issued for Reporting in the Criminal Courts

On 1 October 2009, the JSB published an updated guide to reporting restrictions in the criminal courts in conjunction with the Newspaper Society, the Society of Editors and Times Newspapers Limited.

Courts Judiciary Prospectus of Education April 2010- March 2011

Please follow this link to the new prospectus from which the judiciary can chose the seminars they wish to attend during the period April 2010 to March 2011. These seminars are open to all High Court, Circuit and District Judges. A proportion of Recorders and Deputy District Judges are required to choose a seminar each year.

Guidelines for the Assessment of General Damages in Personal Injury Cases - 9th Edition

The 9th Edition of the JSB's Guidelines for the Assessment of General Damages in Personal Injury Cases has been published and is available to purchase from the Oxford University Press website.

Framework of judicial abilities and qualities

The JSB has approved a single consolidated Framework of Judicial Abilities and Qualities for the High Court and the Circuit and District Benches to replace the previous framework which was for the Circuit and District Benches only. There are two versions one for judicial educators and judges, which explains how the framework should be used in judicial education programmes, and one for the public, which explains how the judiciary will use the framework.

The Tribunal Competence Framework had been revised and added to JSB Publications section.
